“Despite the misleading name, the Australian Shepherd is not Australian at all, but was developed most likely in the Pyrenees Mountains somewhere between Spain and France, and refined in the U.S. to work as a herding dog on ranches.” Over their history as a breed, these dogs have been called by many different names. You can find them under Australischer Schaferhund and Aussie.
This breed…”has many talents; retrieving, herding, watchdog, guarding, police work, narcotics detection, search and rescue, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks.”
With dash and dazzle, these working dogs need lots of high-energy exercise, both for mind and body. Give them a job and they love you. Make them work for their meals, run, jog, or take daily fast walks. Some Australian Shepherd lovers let their Aussies run alongside while they riding bicycles. Never let these dogs lay around. They are not couch potatoes. Aussies tend not to be recommended for apartment living. They grow restless in small spaces.
Easy to groom, Aussie’s coats need little care. Brushing once a week and bathe only when needed. They do shed, but no more than average. Dogbreedinfor.com
A Little Aussie Named Bistro
From Nor Cal Aussie Rescue Web site:
Bistro was picked up by the Placer County shelter and brought to their shelter in Auburn. He’s about 5 years old, intact, and has a horribly sun bleached coat. He was very shy so marked for RESCUE. When I got him to my car, I realized he is blind.
He has learned to navigate around the Sanctuary, but he also likes to be close to me on a leash. He’s friendly with other dogs, and loves being petted and held, but you have to approach him slowly, while saying his name so he doesn’t startle.
We had his teeth cleaned when he was altered and he’s put on a little weight and now weighs 24 pounds. He’s a cutie pie! Fostered in Walnut Creek.

Nor Cal Aussie Rescue was featured in Bark magazine. Case Study: Saving AussiesNorCal Aussie Rescue Sanctuary by Marcia Barkley.
Kim Kuenlen, Founder and President, writes that in 2006 her dream came true when she bought a home with six and a half acres between Auburn and Grass Valley, just off Highway 49. Kim dubbed her new home for Aussie Rescue “the Sanctuary.” Kim and supporters raised money to build indoor kennels and fence two play areas, including an agility ring. The public is invited to visit.
Nor Cal Aussie Rescue is a California State nonprofit public benefit corporation. They rescue, evaluate and then place wonderful Australian Shepherds in just the right new home. They do not adopt dogs to families out of California.
You can donate a gift to pay for dog food, supplies and medical needs at the Nor Cal Web site. Donations may be made using credit card with Paypal. Make your checks to NCAR post office box: NorCal Aussie Rescue, Inc. 10556 Combie Rd, PMB #6200 Auburn, CA 95602
